Deviation Data

Deviation O-038 is a toad-like organism made of lava, measuring 40 centimeters long and weighing about 160 kilograms. To support its high-density body, its limbs are very strong, albeit within a realistic range. Currently, O-038 specimens are under securement. O-038's body is mainly composed of basic lava, and its sub-epidermal temperature can be as high as 500°C to 1,000°C, increasing with measurement depth. Its temperature is highest in its chest and abdomen, while its back and limbs are relatively cooler. Non-destructive testing has revealed a high-density metal core composed of iron and nickel within its abdomen. Otherwise, O-038's internals lack any specific structure and exist in a semi-liquid state. O-038 is indolent and docile and prefers warm and dry habitats. It displays lower levels of activity when exposed to low temperatures. O-038 mainly feeds on rocks and minerals, with a preference for iron-rich substances. It swallows food that is small enough to fit into its mouth but uses its entire body to "engulf" larger items directly into its abdomen. After feeding, O-038 will enter a dormant state as it waits for its food to dissolve completely. This "digestion" process may last several days. O-038's primary Deviation Trait is the thermodynamic anomaly it displays. It is capable of controlling its heat exchange with its surroundings and uses this to keep its internal temperature high enough to maintain a molten state without material or energy inputs. O-038 actively uses this ability to avoid harming the objects it touches and maintains a roughly stable surface temperature of between 73°C and 77°C. Formerly, it was believed that O-038's lifespan is about 10 to 15 years in its natural habitat, and that it will gradually cool and solidify into a basalt statue (designated O-038-A) if it dies of natural causes. However, new research has shown that O-038's lifespan is effectively unlimited and that O-038-A is in a state more akin to freezing than death. Furthermore, it has been determined that O-038-A is the result of the gradual deterioration of heat exchanged between old and very old O-038 individuals. If O-038-A is heated to temperatures exceeding 1100°C, it will "thaw" into a living O-038 individual and resume all normal activities. To keep overheads low, a proposal to add a separate high-temperature securement facility for O-038-A individuals at the securement site has been temporarily shelved. Securement Procedures: DO: Secure O-038-A in a standard securement cell rated Grade II or higher. The temperature in the cell should be kept at a constant -15°C. Secure O-038 in an extreme thermodynamic securement cell rated Grade II or higher, with the full set of supporting facilities for a standard securement cell for living organisms (see Appendix O-038-G-001). Feed O-038 every two days. Its feed should be 50% silica, and include appropriate amounts of iron, nickel, magnesium, and calcium. DO NOT: Attempt to touch O-038 with bare hands.
